In 1962 Dennis Walaker started his career working for the North Dakota Department of Transportation. There he worked with the construction of Interstates 94 and 29. Before he left there in 1974, Walaker was involved with the conversion of University Drive and 10th Street into one-way streets, and also many other City of Fargo Projects. He then was hired by the City of Fargo as a civil engineer. There he supervised public works projects. He then became City’s Public Works Operations Manager in 1989. As his responsibilities grew with the job his job title changed to Director of Operations. Some of the responsibilities included emergency management, forestry, and fleet management. Walaker resigned from the position in May 2006 to pursue a life in politics. On June 13, 2006 Dennis Walaker was elected as Mayor of Fargo for a four-year term, but was not in office until June 28, 2006.  On June 8, 2010 Walaker was then re-elected as Mayor of Fargo during a municipal election.
