Community Involvement

What Dennis Walaker is most known for is his response to the 1997 and 2009 Red River Floods. In 1997, he helped the city coordinate efforts to fight the flood, and then in 2009 he personally supervised the efforts done. For the 1997 flood efforts he was only given a little credit for his help with preparation. He is a member of several organizations, not only for local and regional but also national organizations. This list includes Mayors Climate Protection Center, United Way, the American Legion, the Red River Zoo, the Plains Art Museum, the American Public Works Association, the Sons of Norway, the Water Pollution Control Federation, the American Water Works Association, and Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition. By being in Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition his goal is to “make the streets safer by getting illegal guns off the streets”. Even with all that he is involved with he still had time to meet with two North Dakota State University students for an interview, which was for their English class. He gave us 45 minutes out of his day to help us with our class project when all we asked for was 5 minutes.
